Persuasive Essay On Bullying - 1352 Words

If you saw someone getting bullied, would you try to stop it, or would you ignore it and walk away? Bullying is a big problem, especially in the United States. There are active efforts to stop it, but many studies show that a simple intervention from a bystander can work wonders. In fact, a study done by Hawkins and Pepler from York University, along with Craig from Queen’s University, shows that a whopping 57% of interventions (in bullying situations) are effective. A few days ago, during my stay at the Avera-McKennan medical hospital in Sioux Falls, I met many new people, however, I was shocked at how mean and catty the girls were. She did look a little pale. Snorting, the girl looked Abby up and down. â€Å"Well she needs it,† she stated with a laugh. Everyone looked at Abby. Her pain was visible on her face. She looked down, her smile gone, and the girl said, â€Å"Are you seriously going to get mad over that?† Standing up, she put her hands on the table and leaned toward Abby. In a quiet voice, yet still audible to the quiet room, she whispered, â€Å"You tell any of the nurses or doctors about this, and I’ll make sure you never tell anyone else.† She looked up at the rest of the table to see if we had heard, and everyone quickly looked down and went back to eating. She grabbed her tray and turned to walk away. I looked around the table, and seeing that everyone was ignoring this awful event/situation, I stood up. Not really sure what I was doing, I walked directly in front of the girl and stopped. She told me to get out of her way, using a few choice swear words. â€Å"No,† I said flatly, â€Å"not until you turn around and apologize to Abby.† â€Å"I don’t even know who that is,† she said, rolling her eyes and reaching out a hand to push me aside.† Gently grabbing her hand and pushing it ever so slightly back down, I looked at her and said, â€Å"Abby is the girl with long blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes.
